It's a Really Big Deal!

As women we do so much with our hair that can damage and destroy it, it's no wonder why so many ladies come to me with concerns of breakage. As a stylist I understand what hair means to women. That's why I focus on health first and style second. I've written blogs about hair care before, but, I love educating my Lux Beauties. But, breakage is still at the top of the list when it comes to Q&A sessions with my Lux Beauties... So, I'm writing this short blog to address some of the more recent questions I've been getting.

Sometimes hair breakage and dry, brittle hair are signs of a medical problem, such as hypothyroidism or an eating disorder. If your hair is breaking even though you don't treat it with chemicals or other styling products, it's best you see a doctor. However, most hair damage is self inflicted.

Let's start with the two biggest violators of our hair (i.e. the major causes of breakage).

1. Improper use of chemicals (usually DIY applications).

~ The more chemicals you use the more TLC you should be giving your hair.

2. Neglecting your ends (not getting your ends trimmed regularly).

~ A trim is recommended every 6-8 weeks.

Many first time Lux Beauties (and a few of my seasoned Beauties) enjoy doing home remedy treatments and heat free challenges, but still have ongoing concerns about breakage. So, my first question during our initial consultation or casual conversation about hair is "Do you keep up with your trim schedule?". They usually reply "It's been a while" or there's a long pause and a shame filled "No, not really".... Ladies, I cannot stress enough how important a trim is to anyone with hair.

Another common hair killer is improper extension care. Women often believe that once they get a protective style their job is done. That's a myth ladies! Protective styles need regular care and maintenance too, and protective styles DO NOT LAST FOREVER! With proper maintenance (every 2-3 weeks) a protective style can typically last 8-12 weeks. On the other hand, improper care and maintenance; leaving braids or extensions in too long, pulling them out without professional help, and too much tension can cause hair and scalp damage or even hair loss.

So, ladies if you do nothing else for your hair please stick to a regular maintenance routine or find a stylist that will help you take better care of your hair.
